It was founded way back in 1382, and it was founded by King Tvrtko I Kotromanic. The town consists of a number of castles and fortifications, and a combination of Roman, Byzantine and Oriental architecture. The most famous fortresses are: Fortress Španjola from the 15th century, Kanli Tower from the 17th century and Fortress Forte Mare, which is considered the beginning of the creation of Herceg Novi and today serves as a summer stage. Monuments of cultural and historical significance are: Monastery Savina which consists of three churches - the Small Temple of the Holy Virgin, Great Temple of the Holy Virgin (built between 1777 and 1799) and the Temple of St. Sava, where the relics of the Empress Helena and Cross of St. Sava are held, the Church of St. Archangel Michael, and many other religious buildings. The exceptional richness of the Mediterranean flora is unique in Europe and every year in honor of the Mimosa, which in this area is plentiful, in Herceg Novi "Mimosa Festival" is held in late February and early March, when the town is full of tourists who want to take with them the memory of this event.

The town is near Herceg Novi and it is known as a health resort and spa with exceptional healing sea mud and mineral springs. The city is named after the Greek word meaning coast - beach - shore. A place is attractive in summer and winter too because of his famous spa.
