It is located in the most northern part of the Bokakotorska Bay. As Illyrian town Risan is mentioned in the 3rd century BC as the capital of Queen Teuta. In a cave near the village Lipci the drawings on the walls of the Neolithic and Bronze Age 3,000 years BC are found. The Mosaics made in the 2nd and 3rd century, are significant. The most famous mosaic created during the reign of the Roman Republic and it represents the Greek god of sleep Hypnos. Risan is a town where the first Illyrian mint in Montenegro is. From the time of the Ottoman Empire, there are forts Grkavac and Velenjak and they are located above the city. Risan is a small town with a small beach suitable for family holidays. The road that connects the city today with Nikšic significantly improved the correlation of this part of the Bay with the northeastern part of Montenegro.
