Durmitor is protected as a national park since 1952, extends through massif of Durmitor surrounded with canyons of the rivers Tara, Draga and Susica, and includes the headwaters of river Komarnica. On the surface of the National Park are 18 glacial lakes, which popularly are called "Mountain eyes" and they make this part of Montenegro special. Black Lake, near Zabljak, the largest and most attractive, is surrounded by forests just below the top Meded. In 1980 in Paris Tara is included in the world's ecological reserves. Special construction on this river is Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, built between 1937 and 1940 at the crossroads Mojkovac-Zabljak-Pljevlja, in 1946 the bridge was rebuilt. Durmitor is a natural habitat for many plant and animal species.
